I used a 5.5 crochet hook.
Round 1: ch 4, 8 dc in fourth chain from hook - sl st in first ch.
Round 2: ch 3, 2 dc in each dc - sl in top of first 3 ch.
Round 3: ch 3, 2dc in next dc, dc in following dc (repeat until last dc) - sl st in top of first 3 ch.
Round 4: ch3, dc in each dc - sl st in top of first 3 ch.
Repeat round 4 until round 8.
For embellishment I threaded yarn through both the hat and a large button and tied in a bow.
