These are also a good way to get started if you are new to knitting.
These are all 7" x 9" but will shrink to 7" x 7". If you want them longer, knit more rows.
I used Peaches & Cream cotton yarn from Walmart which was cheaper than cotton yarn at some of the hobby stores.
Needle size: U.S. 6, 4mm, or UK 8
Pattern 1
Dishcloth Pattern 1 |
Border: Knit 10 rows (if you prefer, use seed stitch/moss stitch for the borders)
Pattern Row 1: Knit
Pattern Row 2: Knit 5, purl 20, knit 5
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until dishcloth measures 7"
Knit 10 rows
Cast off

Border: Knit 10 Rows
Pattern row 1: Knit 5 (purl 5, knit 5) repeat until last five stitches, knit
Pattern row 2: Knit 5 (knit 5, purl 5) repeat until last five stitches, knit
Repeat rows 1 and 2, two more times
Pattern row 3: Knit 5 (knit 5, purl 5) repeat until last five stitches, knit
Pattern row 4: Knit 5 (purl 5, knit 5) repeat until last five stitches, knit
Repeat rows 3 and 4, two more times
You will now have a basket weave pattern on your needles. Repeat until dishcloth measures 7"
Border: Knit 10 rows
Cast off

Row 2: Knit 7, (purl 1, yarn around needle to make a stitch, purl 1, knit 2) repeat to last five stitches, knit 5
Row 3: Knit 5, purl 2 (knit 3, purl 2) repeat to last five stitches, knit 5
Row 4: Knit 5, knit 2 (purl 3, knit 2) repeat to last five stitches, knit 5
Repeat until 7" in length ending with row 2
Border: Knit 10 rows
